1968 Democratic National Convention

covered by ABC News, August 28, 1968.

Day Three of the Democratic National Convention was the day the debate and vote occurred on the "Vietnam Plank" of the Democratic platform, and the night Vice President Hubert Humphrey was nominated to run for President. But this night is best known as the night "The whole world is watching" happened. 10,000 war protesters tried to march in Chicago, but were caught between the National Guard and the Chicago Police Department. The resulting chaos overwhelmed nominating activities inside the convention since it was televised.

The 1968 Convention was the last of the Democratic Conventions that was largely determined by party bosses rather than by Primaries. By 1972, the party had moved to many more primaries and the Iowa Caucus made its debut.

The television segments here summarized the news of the day up to the time of the nomination, and was broadcast between 7:30 and 9:00 Central time.
