The CIA FACTBOOK
The U.S. Marshall Plan (to invigorate Europe after WWII) insisted that Europe give up its African colonies. The end of colonial rule led to a power vacuum and pitted the US and Russia vying for rare natural resources (like uranium, cadmium, etc.) Propping up warlord dictators who would turn a blind eye to mining interests while stealing the national treasury ruined every chance for African nations to become prosperous. Eventually the decaying colonial infastructure made things worse. Meanwhile, global warming and desperate farming measures increased desertification putting even more strain on the remaining resources. AIDS strikes without discrimination. If we can fix Africa, we can fix the world. But can we really fix Africa? In the end the Africans need to fix Africa. This could take another 10000 years.
